The problem of corrosion in the upstream petroleum industry is a very serious problem because damage to equipment and supporting components resulting from inappropriate and serious corrosion handling can have fatal consequences such as leaks, explosions, fires, damage to the environment and human security and safety.

Apart from direct or indirect material losses, it can also have a bad image impact on the government and society. That is why handling corrosion in the world of oil is very serious and careful because this industry is very vital and is the biggest contributor to state revenue.

Damage due to corrosion can be caused by many factors, it can occur due to external variables such as the influence of the environment around the equipment which is very corrosive, in the form of static loads, dynamic loads, temperature, operating media and poor maintenance.

In many corrosion control methods, coating or paint is one choice among many other corrosion control methods. This method is considered effective because it is easy to apply both before construction is installed, during fabrication and or after construction is complete.

This paper will generally highlight things that are considered important about coating or painting, what and how to apply coating or painting properly and correctly so that the coating or painting can function as protection against corrosion, be long-lasting and have a good appearance.

Some of the descriptions in this paper are considered important for the author to put forward as a basis for explaining the material as a link in the chain of problems in the upstream oil industry, petrochemicals and other industries that require special handling with coating or painting applications.

Coating or Painting

So that the meaning is not confused, it is necessary to define what is meant by Coating and or Painting. In the corrosion control industry, coating can be interpreted as a coating, protection and function as a corrosion control. Coatings can be in organic and inorganic form in liquid or solid form, from hard non-metallic materials, composites, ceramics, metals and synthetic materials. The types are very diverse.

Meanwhile, painting or what is commonly referred to in Indonesia as paint, is generally made from organic materials in the form of liquids, can function as a corrosion control, but is more prominent in terms of decorative or aesthetic aspects.

It is important to remember that success in controlling corrosion in the petroleum environment is by using as many corrosion control methods as possible, and Coating or Paint is only one method of choice among others which are also applied consistently in the oil world.

Corrosion

Corrosion generally occurs on metal. Corrosion is a chemical or electrochemical reaction that occurs between a metal material and its environment which results in a reduction in the energy strength properties of the metal material.

Physically, damaged metal is seen as a form of damage, and the form of damage that occurs can be evenly distributed or local and this form of metal damage is called corrosion.

The reduction in energy strength characteristics in metal materials occurs in the area called the anode and in the area where there is no reduction in energy quality is called the cathode. Chemical reactions occur in the cathode area due to the formation of bases due to the presence of the solution and over time and the presence of hydrogen gas on the metal surface which will be passive, and this property can reduce the rate of corrosion.

Reactions that occur in the presence of oxygen also occur in the cathode area, and the presence of oxygen can also indicate the rate of corrosion.

Forms and types of corrosion:

The form and type of corrosion must be understood so that we can know what form and type of corrosion can be treated with coating or paint.

Some forms and types of corrosion that generally occur are:

  • Uniform (General, where the anode and cathode are vise versa)
  • Pitting (Wells)
  • Dissimilar metal (Galvanic corrosion)
  • Differential Environment (Impact of different temperatures)
  • Stray Current
  • Dealloying
  • Erosion
  • Exfoliation (Delamination that occurs at grain boundaries).

Of the various forms and types of corrosion above, the one that is worth taking into account when controlling corrosion with Protective Coating is Uniform Corrosion.

Whether the Protective Coating functions or not can also be influenced by the construction design. Poor design can cause the construction to rust more quickly.

Examples of bad design are:

  • Contact between metals of different potential
  • Weather conditions or temperatures that do not match design and actual service
  • The absence of a water trap prevents the buildup of solution or water
  • Crevices or gaps in the construction
  • Rough surface and sharp edges, for example: welding groove
  • Surfaces that are difficult to access or complex surfaces.

There are several corrosion control methods where each method has advantages and disadvantages compared to other methods.

To obtain optimal corrosion control results, you need to apply as many corrosion control methods as possible in an optimal and functional manner and without over protection.
