How the Pillar Jib Crane Works in the Construction Industry

Table of Contents

Technological advances in the industrial sector are increasingly advanced. Likewise the supporting tools that always help in making this happen. Big jobs, of course, require big tools too.

Heavy equipment is a tool used to simplify the work process so that it becomes faster, easier and the results are as expected. The use of heavy equipment must be absolutely correct and adapt to the conditions and situations in the field. Therefore, we must know before renting or using it.

A jib crane or often known as a slewing jib crane is a type of crane that is shaped like a cantilever with a horizontal section (jib or boom) that functions as a beam for hoist movement and is equipped with a pole that can rotate from 180° to 360°.

In addition, this type of crane is also suitable for installation in workstation areas where a lot of lifting is possible. This type of crane is also capable of moving objects weighing from 30 pounds to 100 tons from one point to another.

The overhead handling system on a jib crane has three Degrees of Freedom. Two degrees of freedom in the horizontal direction by the movement of the travel hoist and rotation of the crane pole while for the third degree of freedom in the vertical direction by the movement of the lifting hoist.

The mechanism of the jib crane working system

The following is the mechanism of how the pillar jib crane works in the industrial world, which has several very common mechanisms for the work of this type of crane.

Lifting mechanism

The process of raising and lowering goods using a hoist machine which can be divided into 2 types of hoists, namely chain and wire.

Mechanism Walker

The process of moving the trolley hoist along the crane arm which aims to move goods horizontally

Rotating mechanism

The process of rotating the pillar jib crane is for slewing motion, in which the gear inside will be driven by a motor and rests on the pillar. During the movement process, so that the pillar jib crane remains safe, there is an axle that serves as the beam support on the pillar. Locking between pillars and beams is added to the shaft with a larger size and locked with pegs.

Some of the structure parts of the Jib Crane that you need to know

The part of the jib crane that cannot be separated, because it is the main part of the work carried out by this type of crane. Here are some of the components of the jib crane.

  • Hoist is a machine in the form of a hook which is later used to lift and move loads. The hoist is equipped with a push button (the handle) which aims to move all parts of the jib crane, from lifting, moving the trolley, and also rotating the jib crane.
  • The jib boom is a crane arm that is useful as a path for the movement of the hoist machine, the length of the jib crane arm determines how far the range of moving goods can be reached, besides that the crane arm is also used as a cable path that is used to transmit power to the hoist motor.
  • Rotation Motor is a motor machine that is useful for rotating pillars, where the motor will move the gear inside which is located on the pillar shaft which is connected between the pillar and the crane arm.
  • Column is an iron pillar that is used to support the arms of the jib crane and also the hoist so that it can stand upright. The weight capacity lifted will greatly determine the size of the column design to be made.
  • The base or the base where the Jib crane stands, where there is a foundation that is embedded and serves as a support for all construction loads and transmits these loads into the ground.

2 Types of Jib Cranes

The main parts of this crane are the tower or pillar and the H-beam gantry crane arm, the electric hoist as a lifting device, a single trolley to move in the horizontal direction, the shaft and bearings to support the rotational movement.

Jib crane is a type of crane that uses independent pillars so it can be installed indoors or outdoors. Therefore, this type of crane is divided into two as follows.

Post Jib Crane

Post crane has the characteristics of independent mast, rotation up to 360º, load capacity from 0.5 to 20 tons, crane length 2-10 meters. This tool can lift loads with a height of 3-10 meters and swinging movements with a motor or by hand.

Wall Jib Cranes

Jib cranes that can be mounted on walls, columns or ceilings of buildings. Wall Jib is very responsive with a 180° rotation. The use of course has a Safe Working Load which is fully designed for load transfer. Compact and flexible design, allows the lifting of goods to get the maximum height.

The application of jib cranes can be installed indoors and outdoors. We can find jib crane construction in industrial areas, warehouses, workshops, assembly lines, loading and unloading areas, ports and others that aim to help and simplify the process of lifting heavy materials.

How the Jib Crane works?

The motor part of the jib crane moves or rotates the steel roller drum to pull or wind the steel wire. Then the roller drum will be connected to the pulley and attached with a hook that will carry the item you want to move.
If you want to lift and lower, move things, just turn on the motor to rotate the steel cable roller drum. To harness the crane performs the task of moving the drum.

The steel cable roller will run and have the effect of pulling the steel cable connected to the pulley system. The end of the cable will then be connected to a trolley which can be operated along the lifting arm. Then for rotary or directional gears, the motor drives the gears with large gears and relies on the cylinder so that it can move left and right. To regulate the movement of the gallows to remain stable and attached to the pole.

As well as locking between the post and beam, the wider axle in the wharf will be fitted and locked with a stopper. If you want to make a jib crane work, we only need to turn on the driving motor and the gears will rotate.

This is an explanation of how a heavy equipment called a jib crane works. Hopefully always useful for you. And below is a daily inspection checklist for cranes that you can apply to your jib crane, so that it is always in good condition when it is used.
